    Form 16: Everything you need to know.

    Managing Employment can be a tricky task for both HR and employees. There are several aspects to look at while managing an organisation from an HR point of view such as maintaining employee performance, dealing with paychecks, establishing teamwork and abiding by labour laws.

    Form 16 is all about maintaining one such of the many laws that abide in our country. Form 16 is important for every employed citizen(India).

    • What is Form 16?

    Form 16 is an important certificate that is issued to employed and salaried individuals by their employers.  It is the proof of income tax that is issued by an individual's  employer. Form 16 contains information and details about the income earned, tax deducted and tax paid to the government by an employee. Form 16 has been issued under Section 203 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Form 16 is divided into two parts 16A and 16B.  16A deals with income that is generated through non salary sources such as investments, rent or interests on FD. Meanwhile form 16B is issued through earnings that are generated through immovable property.

    • Uses of form 16:

    Form 16 is used as a proof of income tax and tax deducted at source that is TDS during the financial year. It provides and serves as a record for an employee to verify his/her income and taxes that are being paid by them. Employed and salaried individuals can use Form 16 for tax filing.

    • Importance of Form 16:

    Form 16 is an important tax certificate for both employees and the Income Tax Department. First of all it is proof that an employee is paying their taxes and that the employer has deducted and deposited TDS with the government. It helps individuals to file their Income Tax Returns(ITR). It works as a verifier of income. Form 16 is also important when an individual wants to apply for a loan from a bank as it is a good source to verify income.

    • Form 16 is issued by employers after deduction of TDS from the employee’s salary. Form 16 is only issued for individuals who are earning above Rs. 2.5 lakh. Employers are not obligated to issue form 16 for those who do not earn more than the required and mentioned income.
    • It is important for employers to issue Form 16 by June 15th, every year. In case an employer fails to issue Form 16, employees can put in a formal request, another way is to use and refer to your salary slips and Form 26AS for TDS details, and another option is filing ITR manually.

    Form 16 is an essential document that simplifies tax filing and provides transparency.
